Making this list was a torturous task and it is still open to change. I've evaluated the direction, acting, cinematography, plot, and all the other key characteristics of an excellent movie. I believe that the movies on this list are important for those who will open themselves to the power of cinema. The body of work represented, stretching from the 1920s to 2000s, speaks to the soul of a century. In my opinion, movies are not merely or even least of all for your "enjoyment" but rather, they are artistic interpretations of our culture and society. They should teach us about ourselves and give us the insight to move above ourselves. Look to the top menu for links to all ten webpages in this department. Each page features reviews of one great director and ten great movies.

If you are interested in other great movies, I highly recommend watching "A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese through American Movies" (DVD or VHS), browsing the Criterion Collection; or, checking out Ebert's Great Movies.
