Specialized Studies Texts of Terror by Phyllis Trible In this book, Trible examines the neglected stories of four women: Hagar, Tamar, the Unnamed Concubine (Judg 19), and the daughter of Jephthah. She reclaims the horror of these stories as a message against the oppression of women. more... The Death and Resurrection of the Beloved Son by Jon Levenson In this unique and interesting book, Levenson argues that the notion of child sacrifice in the ANE transformed in Judaism and Christianity into a common theme and/or motif of the death and resurrection of a beloved son. From a distinctively Jewish perspective, Levenson traces this theme through the Hebrew Bible and into the Christian New Testament. more... Theological Exegesis ed. by Christopher Seitz et al. A collection of essays in honor of Brevard Childs, divided into three parts: "Canonical Method," "Canonical Readings and the Old Testament," and "Canonical Readings and the New Testament." more... |
Old Testament Theology Old Testament Theology by Gerhard von Rad This is von Rad's classic exposition of Old Testament theology, which centers on the explication of salvation history (heilsgeschichte). By applying form criticism, von Rad developed an insightful and influential approach to Old Testament theology. more... Theology of the Old Testament Vol. 1, Vol. 2 by Walter Eichrodt A classic in Old Testament Theology, Eichrodt centers the theology of the Old Testament in the concept of covenant. A landmark theology that, it could be argued, revived the discipline. For more, select a volume above... Old Testament Theology in a Canonical Context by Brevard Childs Childs ignores attempts to reconstruct fractured testimonies of individual elements of the text, ie. a theology of "J" or "P". Instead, he approaches the text in its "canonical context" and engages theological issues concerning God, revelation, law, prophets, the priesthood, covenant and promise. more... |
Biblical Theology The Concept of Biblical Theology by James Barr This book does not develop its own biblical theology but instead critiques the concept as it has been argued by other scholars. Barr almost mercilessly criticizes the theologies of Brueggemann and Childs (my favourites). It is an interesting and engaging book with important contributions on the problems and pitfalls of biblical theology and establishing new criteria relevant to the field. more... Biblical Theology of the Old and New Testaments by Brevard Childs "After introductory chapters outlining the history of Biblical Theology and the search for a new approach, Childs examines in detail the witnesses of both Old and New Testaments. He then offers examples of exegesis in the context of Biblical Theology from both Testaments before presenting an extended theological reflection on the major themes of the Christian Bible."
